CTR stands for Click Through Rate. CTR is used in the field of advertisements. It is useful for both advertisers as well as publishers.
If you are a publisher then it plays a big role in generating money and if you are an advertiser then it helps you to know that how many audiences is reaching to you through your ad.
What is CTR in Google Adsense?
CTR (Click Through Rate) is the ratio of Number of ad clicks to the number of page views. CTR value is calculated by a simple formula as given below.
CTR = Number of clicks / Number of page views.
CTR % = (Number of clicks / Number of page views) * 100
What is the Number of clicks?
Whenever a visitor comes to your website and clicks on an ad is known as the number of clicks. If the visitor clicks one time on an ad, will be considered as 1 number of clicks and if the visitor clicks two times on an ad will be considered as 2 number of clicks and so on.
What is the Number of page views?
Whenever a visitor comes to your website and views a page having the ad(ads) is known as the number of page views. A visitor can view many pages and every page will be considered as 1 number of page view. So if a visitor comes to your website and views 12 pages then the number of page views will be considered as 12.
Note: A page view will be counted until the page has at least one ad unit otherwise it will not be considered as a page view in spite of getting a view from a visitor.
So now you got that what is the number of clicks and number of page view. Now come to the point. Let us understand CTR with an example.
Let suppose, you are getting 3 clicks for 375 page views. CTR % = (3/375)*100 = 0.8 %
You are getting 6 clicks for 375 page views. CTR % = (6/375)*100 = 1.6 %
You are getting 9 clicks for 375 page views. CTR % = (9/375)*100 = 2.4 %
Did you observe something in the above examples? As I was increasing the number of clicks for a particular number of page views, CTR percentage was increasing too. Hence a high percentage of CTR represents that for a particular number of page views there is a high number of clicks.
Can CTR more than 100 %?
There is no doubt that a CTR percentage can exceed more than 100%. Let suppose a visitor comes to your website and clicks two times on an ad which is running on a particular page. As per this condition, there is one 1 page view and 2 clicks. Then CTR % = (2/1)*100 = 200 %
Wait, are you saying that high CTR percentage means more earning to a publisher?
Yes, because he/she is getting more number of clicks.
So you mean that high CTR percentage is always beneficial.
Actually, No (as per Google AdSense point of view). Ok so till here I did not talk about CTR% regarding Google AdSense.
Well if you don’t know I want to tell you that Google AdSense is based on artificial intelligence which records human behaviour and takes an action according to their interests. Ok, I not going to talk much more about it but I want to tell you that there is a safe range for CTR percentage in case of Google Adsense.
What is the Safe CTR percentage in Google Adsense?
So are you excited to know that what is the CTR percentage to stay safe with your Gooogle Adsense account? Just read carefully and in next 2 minute, you will be able to know the answer to this question.
Ok, now I am asking a question to you. What would you think about a visitor that comes to your website? I mean is the visitor came to see the ad or to get some information on your website. Obviously, he/she came to your website to get some information that he/she was searching for.
So as per above fact, I can conclude that a visitor comes to a website to get some information and not to see or click on your ad.
Hence as per human behaviour, I can say that there will be a very low number of clicks for a high number of page views.
But now the question arises, how much?
Well, a survey says that when a seller goes to sell a product to 20 unknown customers then he got at least 1 customer to successfully sell the product. So we can see that as per this scenario there are only 5% chances to sell a product.
There is the same situation in the case of Google Adsense. As a visitor comes to a website to take some information regarding his/her query so there are very fewer chances that he/she is going to click on your ad and this chance can vary from 5% to 10%.
Here is the range for CTR in Google Adsense:
CTR % = 0% – 5% (You are in the Safe side).
CTR % = 5% – 15% (It is OK).
CTR % > 15% (Need to take an Action).
What to do in case of High CTR % in Google Adsense (Being a publisher)
If you are a Youtuber then you don’t need to worry about it because Youtube is something that Google handle itself. But you need to take one step that is filling the form provided by Google for invalid clicks (Invalid Clicks Contact Form).
If you are a publisher running your own website then take below steps:
- Remove the ad from your website as soon as possible so that CTR% get stopped there.
- Fill the Invalid Clicks Contact Form provide by Google to inform them that there are some invalid clicks and you are not doing that.
- When you see the CTR get reduced, place the ad again.
